The important word is playback. Normalization generally does not rewrite your master file into a better master. It changes playback level in the app or device. If your master is louder than the platform target, it may be turned down. If it is quieter, the platform may raise playback level within headroom limits. That is useful for listener comfort, but it is not the same thing as mastering.

A normalizer cannot know your artistic intent. It cannot decide that the chorus should hit harder, that the vocal should sit closer, or that the 808 is swallowing the kick. Those decisions have to happen in the mix and mastering process.

Check the kick and bass relationship before mastering. The kick should have room to hit. The bass or 808 should support the groove without pinning the limiter. If the low end blooms on one note, fix that note in the mix. If the 808 is loud only because it has huge sub energy but little midrange definition, it may disappear on phones after normalization.

Use these checks:

  • Loop the chorus and watch whether the master bus jumps on every 808 note.
  • Listen quietly and see whether the bass line is still readable.
  • Compare against a reference at matched loudness.
  • Check a small speaker to hear whether the bass has upper harmonics.

Export the premaster with clean headroom. You do not need a super quiet file, but you do need a file that is not clipping and not already crushed by a limiter. Many mastering engineers prefer a stereo mix with several dB of peak headroom and no limiter on the mix bus unless that limiter is part of the approved sound. If the limiter is part of the sound, also export a version without it so the mastering decision is not trapped.

Check the actual exported WAV, not just the DAW session. Drag it back into a fresh session, play the loudest section, and confirm it did not clip during export. This simple check catches more problems than most plugin swaps.

Fix 4: True Peak Risk

Sample peak and true peak are not the same thing. A master can show safe sample peaks and still create inter-sample peaks during conversion or playback. That is why true-peak limiting matters for streaming safety. Spotify's guidance recommends keeping masters below -1 dBTP for lossy formats, and even more margin for louder masters.

Before mastering, you do not need to solve true peak on the premaster, but you do need to avoid creating a file that leaves no room for it. If the mix bus is already slamming a ceiling at 0 dBFS, the mastering limiter has nowhere to work. If the premaster is clean, the mastering stage can set the final ceiling and loudness intentionally.

Fix 5: Harshness Before the Limiter

Harshness gets worse when the master gets louder. Sibilant vocals, brittle hi-hats, sharp synths, and aggressive upper mids can become painful after limiting. A LUFS normalizer may turn the file down on playback, but the harshness created by over-bright processing remains inside the master.

Fix harshness at the source when possible. De-ess the vocal before export. Tame hi-hats or cymbals that jump out. Use dynamic EQ on piercing synth notes. If the harshness belongs to one track, solve it on that track. Mastering can smooth broad harshness, but it is a blunt tool compared with mix-stage control.

Fix 6: Stereo Width and Mono Translation

Loudness normalization does not care whether your sides are too loud, whether the hook collapses in mono, or whether the vocal disappears when summed. Stereo balance is a mix and mastering decision. If your master only sounds competitive when it is several dB louder than the reference, the mix probably lacks density or tonal balance.

Use a normalizer as a testing lens. Turn your master down until it matches a reference in perceived level. Does the vocal still feel finished? Does the kick still hit? Does the low end still feel controlled? Does the chorus still lift? If the answer is no, the problem is not that the platform will turn you down. The problem is that the loud master was hiding a mix or mastering weakness.

You can also use loudness matching while choosing references. If every reference is much louder than your premaster, lower the references instead of pushing your mix into a limiter too early.
