A limiter is the last place where a record can get louder quickly. That is why it is also the last place where a record can get ruined quickly. The goal is not to make the meter look aggressive. The goal is to make the song feel finished, loud enough for the style, clean enough to translate, and controlled enough that encoding and playback do not create obvious distortion. Limiter settings help, but they only work when the mix and the mastering chain give the limiter something reasonable to catch.

Peaks get reduced, the average level comes up, and the track sounds louder. That can be useful. It can also flatten the song if the limiter is forced to do too much.

Think of the limiter as the final guardrail, not the entire mastering chain. If the mix is muddy, harsh, too dynamic, clipped, or unbalanced, the limiter will reveal that. It may make the loud parts louder, but it will also bring up the problems. A clean master usually gets loud because EQ, compression, clipping, saturation, and limiting are balanced carefully, not because one limiter is smashing 8 dB off the top.

The limiter should answer three questions: how loud can this song get before it sounds worse, what ceiling keeps peaks safe after encoding, and how much movement can the song lose before the groove or emotion collapses?

Do Not Start With A Universal LUFS Target

Streaming services use loudness normalization in different ways, and listener settings can change playback behavior. That information is useful, but it should not be treated as a universal mastering law for every genre, platform, and release.

A quiet acoustic song, a dense trap record, a club track, and a lo-fi interlude should not all be forced into the same loudness decision. The better question is whether the master competes in its style while staying clean. Some songs sound better with more dynamic range. Some modern records expect more density. The limiter setting should serve the song, not a chart copied from the internet.

Use LUFS as one measurement. Also listen at matched loudness against references. If your master only feels exciting when it is louder than the reference, it may not actually be better. Turn the reference down or your master down so they are comparable, then judge punch, vocal clarity, low-end control, width, and fatigue.

Set The Ceiling With True Peak In Mind

The ceiling is the maximum level the limiter allows at the output. A ceiling at exactly 0 dBFS is risky because intersample peaks can appear between digital samples, especially after lossy encoding. These are not magic numbers, but they are sensible starting points when the release will be encoded and played across multiple services.

Do not confuse ceiling with loudness. Lowering the ceiling from -0.1 to -1.0 dBTP does not automatically make the master weak. It gives the final file more protection against clipping and codec distortion. If the master sounds dramatically quieter only because of that ceiling difference, the monitoring comparison may not be level-matched.

Use Oversampling When It Helps

Oversampling lets a limiter process audio at a higher internal sample rate, which can reduce certain forms of distortion and improve peak detection. It can also use more CPU and sometimes change the tone slightly. Use it when the limiter offers it and the master benefits from it, especially on loud modern material.

A common starting point is 2x or 4x oversampling. Higher values can help in some cases, but they are not automatically better. Listen for cleaner transients, less harshness, and fewer crunchy artifacts in cymbals, vocals, and low end. If oversampling changes the feel in a bad way, compare settings and choose the one that actually sounds best.

Oversampling is not a license to over-limit. If the master distorts because the limiter is taking off too much gain, more oversampling may reduce one artifact while leaving the bigger problem intact. The first fix is usually less gain reduction, better chain staging, or a mix adjustment.

Watch Gain Reduction More Than The Loudness Number

Limiter gain reduction tells you how hard the limiter is working. A master can tolerate brief peak catches better than constant heavy reduction. If the limiter is reducing every beat, every vocal phrase, and every transient, the song may lose movement quickly.

As a conservative starting point, try to keep the final limiter catching peaks rather than carrying the entire loudness job. One to three dB of gain reduction on the loudest moments can be clean on many songs. More can work when the mix is built for it, but it demands careful listening. If the kick stops punching, the snare gets papery, the vocal becomes spitty, or the low end starts grinding, the limiter is telling you to back off.

Leave practical headroom in the mix. You do not need to print extremely quiet files, but the mix should not be pinned against zero. More important than the exact peak number is that the mix is clean, balanced, and not already flattened by a limiter used only to make the rough mix feel loud.

Use Multiple Small Stages Instead Of One Brutal Limiter

This does not mean every master needs a long chain. It means the final limiter should not be responsible for fixing every problem at once. If 6 dB of final limiting sounds bad, try reducing harshness before the limiter, controlling sub peaks, using light clipping on drums, or reducing excessive low-end energy in the mix. Then the limiter may only need to catch the final peaks.

If you just finished working on master bus compression, compare the limiter decisions against the balance from mastering compression settings. Compression can add glue and movement control, while limiting sets the final peak boundary. Those are related jobs, but they are not the same job.

Control Low-End Distortion First

Low end is usually what makes a limiter distort first. Kicks, 808s, subs, and bass notes carry a lot of energy. When that energy hits the limiter too hard, the whole master can pump, flatten, or grind. The vocal may even sound like it is ducking because the limiter is reacting to sub peaks.

Check the low end before adding more limiter gain. If one 808 note is 3 dB louder than the rest, automate or clip-gain it. If the kick and bass hit at the same time and overload the limiter, adjust the mix relationship. If there is unnecessary sub below the useful range, filter it carefully. If the bass is stereo and unstable, center the low band.

A limiter is not the cleanest tool for balancing an uneven 808. Fixing the source lets the master get louder with less distortion. This is especially important in hip-hop, trap, drill, EDM, and any track where low end drives the record.

Listen For Vocal And Cymbal Damage

The vocal and top end often reveal over-limiting before the meter does. When a limiter is pushed too far, esses can get sharper, breaths can jump forward, consonants can flatten, and the vocal can feel less three-dimensional. Cymbals, hats, and bright percussion can turn grainy or splashy.

Loop the loudest hook and switch the limiter in and out while matching perceived loudness. If the limited version is only better because it is louder, keep working. If the limited version has more density but the vocal feels harsher, try less input gain, a different limiter mode, more true-peak headroom, or a small EQ move before the limiter.

A mode that sounds louder at first may be flattening the drums. A smoother mode may preserve the vocal but soften the transient. Choose the compromise that serves the release.

Listen for clicks at the start or end, distortion in loud hooks, harsh cymbals, low-end pumping, and vocal changes after encoding. Check the true peak meter on the final file, not only on the live plugin chain. Make sure the file does not clip after conversion or normalization workflows.

The meter may say you gained another dB. The record may say you lost impact.

Also stop when the limiter is fixing mix problems. If a low bass note causes distortion, go back to the mix. If the vocal gets sharp only in the hook, adjust the vocal or top end before the limiter. If the final chorus loses energy, check arrangement density and bus compression before asking the limiter for more level.
